A 5-panel drug test (hair) is a method used to screen for drug use by analyzing hair samples. Hair drug tests are known for their ability to detect drug usage over a longer period, typically up to 90 days, as opposed to urine or saliva tests which cover a shorter time window.
What does it test for?
The 5-panel drug test commonly screens for the following substances:
- Marijuana (THC)
- Cocaine
- Opiates (such as heroin, codeine, morphine)
- Amphetamines (including methamphetamine)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
How does it work?
- A small sample of hair (usually from the scalp) is collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
- The lab analyzes the hair for drug metabolites, which get embedded in the hair shaft after drug use.
- Since hair grows slowly, drugs can be detected for a long period, making it useful for identifying regular or occasional drug use over the past three months.
Detection Window
- Approximate detection period: 90 days
- Hair tests can show long-term use but are not effective for identifying very recent drug use (within the last 7–10 days).
Advantages
- Longer detection window (up to 90 days)
- Difficult to tamper with (less chance of false negatives)
Disadvantages
- Does not detect very recent drug use
