A type of genetic testing typically used to determine biological relationships, particularly paternity, or for health-related genetic investigations. It involves testing DNA from three individuals: the child, the mother, and the alleged father.
Common Uses of Trio DNA Testing:
- Paternity Testing: The most common use, where the DNA of a child is compared with that of both the mother and the potential father to confirm the biological father.
- Genetic Disorders: Sometimes, this type of test is used to identify inherited genetic conditions by analyzing the genetic makeup of the parents and child.
- Legal Purposes: Trio tests may be used in legal situations, such as child custody, immigration, or inheritance cases, where establishing a biological relationship is necessary.
- Ancestry or Medical Testing: In some cases, trio testing is used to evaluate inherited traits or potential genetic risks for specific conditions.
How It Works:
- Sample Collection: Buccal swabs (cheek swabs) are usually collected from all three participants.
- DNA Analysis: The samples are analyzed in a lab where genetic markers in the child’s DNA are compared to those of the mother and the alleged father.
- Results: A report will indicate whether the alleged father is the biological father (in the case of paternity testing) or highlight any genetic anomalies (for health-related tests).
