Test screens for the presence of drugs and their metabolites in a person's system using fingernail clippings or shavings. This type of test can detect long-term drug use since substances are incorporated into the keratin structure of nails as they grow. The test is non-invasive and has a detection window of several months, depending on the length of the nails, typically 3 to 6 months.
Here are the common drugs included in a 10-panel drug test:
- Amphetamines (e.g., methamphetamine, ecstasy)
- Cocaine
- Opiates (e.g., heroin, morphine, codeine)
- Marijuana (THC)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
- Benzodiazepines (e.g., Valium, Xanax)
- Barbiturates
- Methadone
- Propoxyphene (a synthetic opioid)
- Methamphetamines
Advantages of Fingernail Drug Testing:
- Long detection window: It can detect drug use for up to 6 months.
- Hard to adulterate: Since nails grow slowly, it’s difficult to manipulate results.
- Convenience: Non-invasive, simple collection.
This test requires the clippings of all ten fingernails or all ten toenails. Fingernails and toenails should never be mixed in the same sample.
