A 10-panel hair drug test is used to detect the presence of drug metabolites in a person's hair. Unlike urine or blood tests, which detect recent drug use, a hair test can detect drug use over a longer period of time—typically up to 90 days—depending on the length of the hair sample.
Here’s a breakdown of the substances typically tested for in a 10-panel hair drug test:
- Marijuana (THC)
- Cocaine
- Opiates (Heroin, Codeine, Morphine)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
- Amphetamines
- Methamphetamine
- Benzodiazepines
- Barbiturates
- Methadone
- Propoxyphene
How it works:
- A small sample of hair (usually around 1.5 inches) is collected from the scalp.
- The sample is sent to a lab for analysis.
- The test looks for drug metabolites that become trapped in the hair shaft as it grows.
Advantages:
- Long detection window: Up to 90 days.
- Harder to cheat: Hair tests are more difficult to tamper with than urine tests.
Limitations:
- Does not detect recent drug use: It may take 5-10 days after use for drugs to be detectable in hair.
